Medical malpractice among several charges filed against San Diego County
A woman recently filed several charges, including medical malpractice, against San Diego County after her son took his own life while inside a detention facility, an article of the San Diego Reader reported on August 11.
The woman, Rochelle Nishimoto, also filed wrongful death and negligence charges against the county, saying they violated Jason Nishimoto’s 14th Amendment liberties. Nishimoto committed suicide by hanging himself while at the Vista Detention Facility. Jason, a “paranoid schizophrenic,” initially sought medical attention at Tri-City Medical Center before he was detained. According to the lawsuit filed, the county was aware of Jason’s medical condition and his prior suicide attempts. The lawsuit also claimed that the detention facility failed to provide him the medical attention he needed before Jason committed suicide.
